Singapore: The Golden Age
It was not long ago that Singapore's founding minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, had just passed away. Many Singaporeans shed tears for him and were very sad about this. But this was a situation when we could actually see the true spirit of Singaporeans. During the mourning week, although I did not go to pay respects, there were 1.2 million Singaporeans who went to pay respects to Mr Lee at the Parliament House. There were long queues at the Parliament House for every day that it was open. Despite the differences in our race, language and religion, it was obvious that the Singaporean spirit was present in us then. Many people brought drinks for us to drink as we queued for long hours, sometimes for 8, under the hot sun. Also a florist actually decided to give away flowers for the people paying respects to Mr Lee, instead of making money through the situation. I am proud to be a Singaporean as Mr Lee has shaped Singapore to become like that, a multiracial and gracious society.
Just like what United States president Mr Barack Obama said about Mr Lee, his legend would always be remembered. He did a lot of things for Singapore and just like what he said, devoted his life to Singapore:
"I have no regrets. I have spent my life,
so much of it, building up this country.
There's nothing more that I need to do.
At the end of the day, what have I got?
A successful Singapore.
What have I given up?
My life."
He has left behind a legacy for us: a multiracial society, a successful singapore with one of the highest GDP in the world and a continually prospering Singapore. With the future leaders of Singapore continuing his legacy, I am sure that Singapore will become the next golden age.
