One-Child Policy (SUMIKO)

In fact, I would say the question is pretty much invalid as the government is doing things to improve the current situation of dwindling population. However I agree that the population is slow due to lesser birth rate in a year and also lesser foreigner residing in Singapore.

If this rate continues, the aging population would increase and that would mean less people in the working industry and lesser economic growth. We need to increase the total fertility rate(TRF) to make sire the aging population would tally with the new borns which the country will rely on in the future. People nowadays are independent and work very hard, this might help in the economic growth but in the long run if they do not give birth and form families, this will bring a problem for the country's economy in the future. For a stable population growth, the country have to let people know the advantages of having children and also make having children more of an advantage than a disadvantage. People would also like to a optimal environment to let their children grow in then they feel ready to be responsible for another life. People think very carefully before giving birth as they are afraid they will be unable to cope with the demands of being a parent, some people might not want to lose freedom, I think the government has to change the mentality of people in order to have the population growth needed. What I think the government should do in order to have a higher TRF is that they will have to let people know advantages of child births and the disadvantage of giving birth to only one child. As we learnt in lesson about the China's one child policy, when it is later, the child would have to support two parents and a couple would have to support four elderlies(parents). This would bring burden for the child as well as couple, that's why giving birth to more children in a family helps the future generation. The government should highlight examples like this to the people as some people might be clueless about this. Well of course the plans like baby bonus works, they would also have to persuade people who are not interested with the bonus. The government would also have to provide a good working environment for the people residing the Singapore, the people would then trust to form families in Singapore and let their future generations stay in Singapore. I believe that if there is faster developments like faster and more houses built, more people would form stable families and give birth to more children. With good country conditions, more people living in other countries would consider relocated to Singapore and form families in Singapore helping with the population growth, people holding work permit or study permit might also want to stay in Singapore and form families.

It is going to take a lot of effort to change the current situation of dwindling population, however I believe the government  have plans for the country and will hit its target of 6million population by 2020.
