Poverty In Singapore (Ying Han)
In Singapore, there are about 105,000 families who earn on average $1,500 a month. This is barely enough for them to afford their daily needs. It could be because they have too many children to look after thus making it only realistic to have just one parent work or they could be missing an education, which could possibly prevent them from getting a better paid job. However, the government in our country have schemes to help these families get by in life, such as helping poorer students purchase textbooks and school uniforms. In addition, another scheme also in existent is the Edusave Bursary scheme. This scheme rewards students with lower family incomes for doing well in their studies.
I feel that it is great that the government is helping the poorer families in our country in a way like that as it helps those families break the cycle of poverty. In today's world, having an education is extremely important as it can get you places. In the past, some families could not afford education for their children which resulted in their children growing up to take up lower paying jobs. However, now, with the government helping to pay part of the school fees and providing free uniforms and books for these needy students, parents find it easier to send their children to school, resulting in them having a proper education and an equal chance as other children to do well in school and in the future, take up a well paying job. As mentioned above, a bursary is also given to these children who do well in their studies. This is definitely a motivating factor for them to score well in their examinations, which also means more knowledge is gained from them being sent to school.
In conclusion, although I feel that as one of the worlds' riches nations, we should not have so many families living in poverty, I must acknowledge that the government's efforts in helping to break the cycle of poverty is no doubt very much appreciated. Also, I feel very strongly that education is fundamental to a bright future. Hence, I concur with the many schemes that the government is coming up with related to education.
