CID REFLECTION(POVERTY)

Poverty in Singapore is probably something that is invisible to us Singaporeans and foreigners too unless we are the few that is less well off in terms of our financial income . Singapore being considered one of the richest city in the world and naturally nobody will ever think of Singapore as a country with the word "poverty" involved .

However , there are still about 105,000 households that earns less than Singapore's average per capita income of $52,305 per year , people can be seen often selling tissue packets outside hawker centers to make a living or even collecting drink cans from trash cans. Indeed , Singaporeans are not aware of the scale and the depth of poverty in Singapore.

I believe that the reason why Singaporeans are not aware of poverty that occurs in our own country is because people living in poverty are well hidden because housing in Singapore are is relatively affordable and even the poor will still have a roof under their heads. Homeless people are still considered relatively little compared to other countries.

Despite that , I believe that the awareness of poverty in Singapore will increase as campaigns to create awareness are increasing over the last few years . For example, "Singaporeans Against Poverty" is one of them . This campaign is intended to be carried out for three to five years and it's aim is to let everyone start thinking about the poor in Singapore but not a charity or donation drive . Videos and advertisements carry out the message that the poor in Singapore will not be worrying about what to wear for work, making decisions to sell their houses for profit or considering to purchase cars but they will be worrying about trying to make ends meet , how to earn more money to allow their children to have three meals per day. Most importantly , they want to create awareness on how the poor in Singapore lives by everyday. They also encourage everyone to participate in its $5 dollar challenge , this challenge is just challenging the participants to only use $5 dollars a day for food and transport . I find this challenge pretty interesting as $5 is probably not enough for three meals for a average adult . I'm sure that almost everyone will struggle to use only five dollars a day since a simple meal will probably be $5.

Throughout this few years , I feel that the awareness of the poor in Singapore is gradually increasing and the government has also implemented more schemes to aid them financially . With the help of the government and campaigns related to poverty , I believe that poverty in Singapore will be less serious and affect a even smaller group of people as time passes. Poverty is something that may not be fully resolved no matter what but I feel that it can minimized through the support that us citizens provide for them and also the government .
